Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Ascoli Piceno can be described as
transitional Mediterranean, since it has relatively mild winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is located 150 meters (490 feet) above sea level, in the southern part of the Marche region, at the confluence of the Tronto river and the Castellano stream. About 25 km (15 mi) to the east we find the coast of the Adriatic Sea.
On three sides there are
mountains. To the north we find Monte Ascensione, 1,100 meters (3,600 ft) high, while to the south we find the Montagna dei Fiori, 1,814 meters (5,951 ft) high. About 20 km (12 mi) to the west we find Monte Vettore, belonging to the Sibillini mountains, one of the highest peaks of the Apennines with its 2,476 (8,123 ft) meters of height.
The mountains influence the climate, making it rainier than in the other cities of the Marche region.
The
winter, from December to February, is quite mild, however, the temperature can decrease during irruptions of cold air from Eastern Europe.
Snow in Ascoli Piceno is not very frequent, however, during cold air irruptions from the north-east, with the humid air from the sea rising as it meets the Apennines, sometimes snowfalls can be abundant. On more than one occasion, the snow exceeded half a meter (20 in) in height. Indeed, Ascoli Piceno can be considered the snowiest city in central Italy, at least among those below 200 meters (650 feet) of altitude.
During
cold spells, which are becoming rarer due to global warming, the temperature can drop by several degrees below freezing.
The
summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with rare rainy days and a few thunderstorms coming from the Apennines.
Due to its position in a valley between the mountains, Ascoli Piceno is particularly hot, at least during the day, while in the evening the breeze arrives from the mountains.
The highest temperatures are recorded when the wind blows from the southwest, from the Apennines. In July 2000 the temperature reached 44 °C (111 °F).

The
