Climate chart - Jerusalem
Jerusalem has a Mediterranean climate, although influenced by the altitude, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
Jerusalem is a city of 980,000 inhabitants, located in central Israel, on the Judean Hills plateau, and at 31 degrees north latitude. The altitude varies approximately from 570 to 830 meters (1,870 to 2,725 feet). The center is at 760 meters (2,495 ft).
About 50 kilometers (30 miles) to the west is the Mediterranean coast, while about 20 km (12 mi) to the east is the Dead Sea depression.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to 525 millimeters (20.5 inches) per year, however, it is concentrated from November to March, a period during which it can be abundant. In the hot season it almost never rains for a long period, from May to September.

The winter, from December to February, is mild, with an average January temperature of around 9.5 °C (49 °F). There are sunny periods, however, there are also periods of bad weather, with wind, rain and storms.
Due to the altitude and distance from the sea, temperatures are lower than on the coast, and during cold air outbreaks, snowfall can occur, which can occasionally be heavy. During heavier snowfalls, such as in February 1992 and December 2013, snow depths can reach about half a meter, although in February 1950 it reached one meter (40 inches). In the winter of 1991-92, there were three days with snow in January and six in February.
During these cold spells, the temperature usually drops to freezing or slightly below. The coldest record is -5.1 °C (22.8 °F), set during the historic cold spell of February 1950.

Summer, from June to September, is hot and sunny. The average temperature in August, the warmest month, is 25.5 °C (78 °F). A lively breeze blows in the afternoon, and at night the temperatures are more pleasant than on the coast, however, the sun at these latitudes (and altitudes) is very strong.
In addition, there can sometimes be heat waves from the deserts of Egypt, which are more likely in spring, and a little less in autumn, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 37/38 °C (98/100 °F). In these cases, however, the humidity drops considerably. The heat record is 42.7 (108.9 °F) °C, set in early September 2020.
