Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Zahedan is
subtropical desert (according to the Köppen classification, hot desert climate - BWh), with mild winters and very hot, sunny summers. Precipitation, decidedly scarce, even below 100 millimeters (4 inches) per year, occurs mostly from December to April.
Zahedan is a city of 585,000 inhabitants located in the south-east of Iran, in the province of Sistan and Baluchistan, at 1,380 meters (4,525 feet) above sea level and at 29 degrees north latitude. About 35 km (22 mi) to the north is a point where the border between three countries, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, meets.
About 100 km (62 mi) to the south is
Taftan volcano, 3,941 meters (12,930 ft) high. To the west, instead, is the
Lut desert, a very hot area, whose altitude varies between 200 and 700 meters (650 and 2,300 ft).
Winter, from December to February, is mild, with rare rainfall. The temperature is often mild or very mild during the day, although it drops significantly at night, and can go around 0 °C (32 °F) or slightly below, especially in January.
Snowfall is rare, both because the winter is mild and because it is dry. However, there are sometimes cold periods, during which it can snow. During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -10 °C (14 °F) or below. In recent decades, the temperature has never dropped below -13 °C (8.5 °F), however, the record is -22 °C (-7.5 °F), set in January 1973.
Summer, from June to August, is very hot, although the humidity is low and the wind blows regularly. On the hottest days the temperature can exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In July 2024, it reached 43.8 °C (110.8 °F).
