Climate chart - Yazd
The climate of Yazd is subtropical desert, with mild winters (but during which it can get cold at night) and very hot, sunny summers.

Yazd is a city of 530,000 inhabitants located in central Iran, in the province of the same name (of which it is the capital), at almost 32 degrees north latitude and at 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) above sea level. About 35 km (22 mi) southwest of the city is Mount Shir Kuh, 4,055 meters (13,303 ft) high, while to the north are the Kharanaq mountains, which exceed 3,000 meters (9,800 ft).

Precipitation is decidedly scarce. We are in a particularly arid area, between the Kavir desert to the north and the Lut to the south-east. With just over 50 millimeters (2 inches) of rain per year, Yazd is one of the driest cities in Iran.
Desert dust can be blown by the wind, or it can create a typical haze when the wind is light.

Winter, from December to February, is mild during the day, but at night the temperature drops a lot, and quite often drops to around freezing or a little below.
There can be mild periods, with highs of 17/18 °C (63/64 °F) or more during the day, but also cold periods, during which snowfalls can occur, generally not abundant given the low level of precipitation. During cold spells, the temperature usually drops to -7/-8 °C (18/19 °F), and more rarely to lower values. In the exceptional month of January 2008, the temperature dropped to -12 °C (10.4 °F), and there were twelve days with snow.

Summer, from June to August, is very hot and sunny, so much so that the average highs in July are 40 °C (104 °F). In the hottest days, the temperature can reach 45/56 °C (113/115 °F).
