Climate chart - Urmia
The climate of Urmia is arid continental, with cold winters and hot, sunny summers.

Urmia (also spelled Orumiyeh, Oroumieh, Oroumiyeh, Orūmīyeh and Urūmiyeh, formerly Rezaiyeh) is a city of 735,000 inhabitants located in the northwest of Iran, in the province of East Azerbaijan, at 37 degrees north latitude and 1,350 meters (4,400 feet) above sea level. About 35 km (21 mi) to the west is the border with Turkey, while further south is the border with Iraq.
Nearby is Lake Urmia, one of the largest salt lakes in the world. The lake influences the climate, making the summer a little less hot, but with a little higher humidity, than in other cities of the province such as Tabriz. However, in recent years the lake has been drying up.

Winter, from December to February, is cold, with a daily average around freezing.
Given the low temperatures, snowfall is quite frequent, although generally not abundant, given the low level of precipitation. During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F) or below. In January 1950, the temperature dropped to -24 °C (-11 °F).

Spring, from March to May, is a variable season, with temperature changes and gusts of wind. Furthermore, it is the rainiest season, also due to to the thunderstorms that break out in April and May.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with nights generally quite cool. Due to its northern location and the proximity to the lake, Urmia in summer is one of the least hot cities in Iran. However, heat waves are possible, with peaks of 37/38 °C (99/100 °F).
