Climate chart - Tehran
Tehran's climate is arid continental, with quite cold, relatively rainy winters and very hot, sunny summers.
The city is the capital of Iran and is located in the north of the country, at 35 degrees north latitude. We are in the northern part of the Iranian plateau and at the foot of the Alborz Mountains, beyond which lies the Caspian Sea. Instead, south of the city lies the desert.

The northern suburbs, located at an altitude of up to 1,700 meters (5,600 feet) above sea level, are colder than the central and southern areas, which are located around 1,000/1,200 meters (3,300/4,000 feet). So, the average daily temperature in January ranges from 2.5 °C (36.5 °F) in the northern area to 5 °C (41 °F) in the southern one, while in July, it ranges from 29 °C to 31 °C (84 °C to 88 °F).

Winter, from December to February, is quite cold, although there are quite mild periods, especially in February, when the maximums exceed 12 °C (53.5 °F). Sometimes there can be cold spells, in which the temperature drops below freezing, and it can also snow. At Mehrabad Airport, located at 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) on the western outskirts of the city and more representative of its climate, the coldest record is -13 °C (8.6 °F), set in January 1973. However, at Imam Khomeini airport, located 30 km (18 mi) southwest of the city and 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level, the temperature dropped to -20 °C (-4 °F) in January 2008.

Summer in Tehran is hot, with scorching days, usually around 35/37 °C (95/99 °F) in July and August, but the humidity is low and the wind blows frequently. Sometimes there can be heat waves, during which the temperature reaches or exceeds 40 °C (104 °F). The highest record is 43 °C (109.4 °F), set in July 1975.

In Tehran, only 240 mm (9.5 in) of rain fall per year, most of which occurring from November to April: the desert is not far from here. However, in the northern districts, close to the mountains, rainfall exceeds 400 mm (15.5 in) per year.

In Tehran, the sun shines regularly in summer, while in winter, there is an alternation between cloudy and sunny days. On average, there are 3,000 hours of sunshine per year.
