Climate chart - Shiraz
The climate of Shiraz is subtropical semi-arid, with fairly mild winters and very hot, sunny summers. Precipitation, scarce, occurs mostly from November to April.

Shiraz is a city of 1,500,000 inhabitants located in the south of Iran, in the province of Fars (the original homeland of the Persian people), of which it is the capital, at 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) above sea level and at 29 degrees north latitude.
We are in the area occupied by the Zagros mountains. The closest mountain to Shiraz is Mount Derak, which is 2,900 meters (9,514 ft) high.
Also near the city is Lake Maharloo, a salt lake fed by the seasonal Rudkhaneh Khushak River.
About 50 km (30 mi) northeast of Shiraz is the ancient city of Persepolis, which is located at 1,600 meters (5,250 ft) above sea level and has a similar climate. Further northeast, at 1,850 meters (6,050 ft), is Pasargadae.

Winter, from December to February, is quite mild, despite the altitude, because the latitude is low and the mountains somewhat hinder the descent of cold air from the north. However, at night the temperature drops considerably, and goes often below freezing.
There can be mild periods, with highs of 18 °C (64.5 °F) or more, but also cold periods, during which snowfall can occur. During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -7/-8 °C (18/19 °F) or below. The coldest record is -14 °C (7 °F), set in January 1973.

Summer, from June to August, is very hot, although air humidity is low. On the hottest days, the temperature can exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In July 2024 it reached 43.5 °C (110.3 °F), and the average high was 41 °C (106 °F).
