Climate chart - Mashhad
Mashhad is a city located in the north-east of Iran, in the province of Razavi Khorasan (of which it is the capital), at 36 degrees north latitude and 985 meters (3,200 feet) above sea level. With 3,300,000 inhabitants, it is the second most populous city in the country. About 70 kilometers (43 miles) to the east is the border with Turkmenistan.

The climate of Mashhad is arid continental, with quite cold winters and hot, sunny summers.

Winter, from December to February, is quite cold, with frequent night frosts. Fog can form during periods of stable weather.
There can be mild periods, with highs of 15 °C (59 °F) or more, but also cold periods, during which snowfalls can occur, generally not abundant given the low level of precipitation. During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F) or below. The coldest record is -28 °C (-18.4 °F), set in February 1972.

Spring, from March to May, is a variable season, with temperature changes and gusts of wind. Furthermore, it is the rainiest season, also due to the thunderstorms that break out in April and May.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny. Luckily, however, the air is dry. During heatwaves, temperatures can exceed 40 °C (104 °F). The hottest records are around 42/43 °C (108/109 °F).
