Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Iranshahr is
subtropical desert (according to the Köppen classification, hot desert climate - BWh), with very mild winters and very hot, sunny summers. Precipitation is decidedly scarce, just above 100 millimeters (4 inches) per year.
Iranshahr (formerly Pahrah) is a city of 115,000 inhabitants located in the south-east of Iran, in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan, at 550 meters (1,800 feet) above sea level and at 27 degrees north latitude.
Winter, from December to February, is very mild, so much so that the average in January is 15 °C (59 °F). Rainfall is rare even in this season. Unlike other inland zones of Iran, we are in an area sheltered from cold waves and snowfall.
However, there can be periods of cool weather from time to time, when the temperature drops below 5 °C (41 °F) at night, and remains around 10/12 °C (50/54 °F) during the day. Occasionally it can also drop below freezing. In December 1994, it dropped to -3.3 °C (26 °F). In January 2008, there was a rainy day with a maximum of 6 °C (43 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is very hot, although the humidity is low and the wind blows regularly. Despite the altitude, the average temperature, almost 38 °C (100.5 °F) in July, makes Iranshahr one of the hottest cities in the world. However, unlike what happens in the province of Khuzestan, here the temperature does not exceed 50 °C (122 °F). In July 2024 it reached 48.9 °C (120 °F), and there were two days with a minimum of 36 °C (97 °F).
In summer, this southeastern part of Iran is marginally affected by the
monsoon, so there may be some cloudiness and thunderstorms. However, the average amount of rainfall is very low.
Occasionally, the area can be affected by
tropical cyclones (which usually pass further south, over the Arabian Peninsula, or hit Pakistan, further east), as happened with Cyclone Gonu in early June 2007. Since the city is far from the coast, strong winds are unlikely to arrive, but there can be heavy rainfall.
Cyclones form from May to November, and are more frequent at the beginning of the period (May-June), and a little less so at the end (October-November).
