Climate chart - Gorgan
The climate of Gorgan is Mediterranean, with mild, relatively rainy winters and hot, muggy summers.

Gorgan (formerly Astarabad) is a city of 350,000 inhabitants located in northern Iran, in the province of Golestan (of which it is the capital), at almost 37 degrees north latitude.
We are 40 kilometers (25 mi) east of the coast of the Caspian Sea, the largest lake in the world, from which comes the humidity that makes this the only green area of Iran. However, the city is not as rainy as the area further west, located directly south of the lake (see Rasht), where precipitation exceeds 1,000 millimeters (40 inches) per year. In fact, the northeastern part of Golestan is practically desert.

Immediately south of the city are the Alborz mountains, which separate the Caspian Sea from the arid plateau of Iran. Among the peaks stands out the Kuh-e Shahvar, 3,890 meters (12,762 feet) high.
From these mountains, hot winds can blow, able to raise the temperature by several degrees, so much so that the heat records exceed 40 °C (104 °F) from April to October. At the end of May 2015, the temperature even reached 46 °C (115.1 °F).

The winter, from December to February, is mild and quite rainy. However, it gets often cold at night, with lows around freezing. In addition, there can sometimes be cold periods, and it can even snow. In the last thirty years, the coldest record is -12 °C (10.5 °F), set in January 2008.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and muggy, with rare rains and some thunderstorms. The combination of temperature and humidity makes the heat unpleasant, furthermore, there can be very hot periods, with highs of 37/38 °C (99/100 °F).
