Climate chart - Palembang
The climate of Palembang is equatorial, hot, humid and rainy all year round, although the rains are more frequent and abundant from November to April, and less frequent from June to September.
The city is located in the southeast of the island of Sumatra, at 3 degrees south latitude. The Musi River, which runs through the city, flows into the sea about 65 km to the north. A short distance from the coast is the island of Bangka.
June to September is the period of the south-east monsoon, which brings dry air from Australia to the eastern part of the island of Java, while rainfall still occurs here, although less often than in the rest of the year.
Although temperatures are stable, during the day they are slightly higher at the end of the relatively dry season, from August to October, or in November when it doesn't rain. The temperature reached 36.8 °C (98.2 °F) in October 2015 and 36.6 °C (97.9 °F) in November 2019. At night, the temperature almost never drops below 20 °C (68 °F).
Since we are close to the Equator, the length of day and night is very similar throughout the year. The day lasts 11 hours 57 minutes on June 21, and 12 hours 18 minutes on December 21. The sun reaches the zenith at noon around September 30 and March 13.
Being close to the equator, Palembang is not affected by tropical cyclones.
