Climate chart - Jakarta
Jakarta's climate is tropical, hot all year round, with a rainy season from October to May and a dry season from June to September.
The city is the capital of Indonesia and is located on the northwest coast of the island of Java, at 6 degrees south latitude. In the metropolitan area we find the cities of Bekasi, Tangerang, South Tangerang, and Depok. To the south are volcanoes, including Pangrango, 3,019 meters (9,905 feet) high, and Gede, 3,008 meters (9,869 feet) high.
November to March is the period of the northwest monsoon, during which the rains are more frequent and abundant and the sky is more often cloudy, especially in January and February, when there can sometimes be floods.
June to September is the period of the southeast monsoon, which brings rain on the southern side of Java (at least in the western part of the island), while in Jakarta, protected by the mountains, in this period the weather is often sunny, even though some thunderstorms can break out.
In August, temperatures begin to rise again slightly, and the period with the highest temperatures of the year begins, before the rainy season. The record heat is 37 °C (98.5 °F) and was set in October 2002. On the other hand, occasionally the temperature can drop slightly below 20 °C (68 °F) from June to September.
Since we are close to the Equator, the length of day and night is very similar throughout the year. The day lasts 11 hours 45 minutes on June 21st, and 12 hours 30 minutes on December 21st. The sun reaches the zenith at noon around October 9th and March 5th.
Being close to the Equator and on the north side of Java, Jakarta is not affected by tropical cyclones. In the warm period of the southern hemisphere (between November and May, but more likely between December and mid-April), tropical cyclones can sometimes form on the Indian Ocean, which pass off the southern coast of Java, in the area of the Cocos Islands and of Christmas Island, and can bring heavy rain on the southern coast of Java.
