Climate chart - Gorontalo
Gorontalo's climate is equatorial, hot, humid and rainy all year round, although the rains are more frequent from December to March and less frequent from July to September.
The city is located in the north of the island of Celebes (or Sulawesi), just north of the Equator, on the Minahasa peninsula, and overlooks the Gulf of Tomini. To the west of the city lies Lake Limboto, while to the south is the estuary of the Bone River. To the north-east there are mountains that reach 1,600 meters (5,250 feet) in height.
Temperatures are high and uniform throughout the year, although they are slightly higher both in April-May and from September to November, and a bit lower in July and August.
Rainfall is not very abundant, since we are in a quite sheltered area, although it is quite well distributed throughout the year, in fact, the landscape is lush. Anyway, there is the northeast monsoon from November to March, which particularly affects the north slope of Sulawesi, i.e. the coast of the Celebes Sea, while it is not very effective on the south side and in the Gulf of Tomini, and the southeast monsoon from June to September, which is usually quite dry, although it can bring some rain, especially at the beginning of the period (June). Then, there is a certain increase in rainfall due to the two zenith passages of the sun, from April to June and in October and November. Furthermore, the rains may increase in La Niña years.
Sometimes, intense and concentrated rains can occur, which can cause floods, even in June and September.
Being close to the equator, Gorontalo (and in general the island of Celebes) is not affected by tropical cyclones.
