Climate chart - Banda Aceh
The climate of Banda Aceh can be defined as equatorial, since it is hot all year round and without a dry season, although there is a rainier period from October to January, due to the northeast monsoon and to the tropical depressions that form in this period. There are two relatively drier periods, from February and March, when the northeast monsoon got weaker, and from June to August, when the southwest monsoon affects India and Southeast Asia.
The city is the capital of the province of Aceh and is located in the extreme north-west of the island of Sumatra and of all of Indonesia, at 5 degrees north latitude and at the mouth of the Aceh River. A short distance from the coast are some small islands, including Weh (or Sabang), while to the north-west are the Nicobar Islands, belonging to India. Nicobar, belonging to India.
Temperatures are slightly lower in the Northern Hemisphere winter (November to February), and slightly higher from April to August.
Sometimes, in Banda Aceh, particularly heavy rains can lead to floods, especially in the wettest period, from October to January, but occasionally even outside this period.
Being close to the equator, Banda Aceh is generally not directly affected by tropical cyclones. However, from April to December, a cyclone can occasionally form on the sea north of Sumatra, which then heads towards the Andaman Sea. In late December 2001, Tropical Storm Vamei followed an anomalous trajectory, in fact it formed at a very low latitude and directly affected the island of Sumatra.
