Balikpapan's climate is equatorial, hot, humid and rainy all year round, although the rains are more frequent and abundant from December to March and less from June to October.
The city is located in Indonesia, in a bay on the east coast of Borneo, in the province of East Kalimantan, one degree south latitude and 90 km (55 mi) southwest of Samarinda.
Being close to the equator, Balikpapan is not affected by tropical cyclones.
