The climate of Visakhapatnam (also known as Vizagapatam, Vizag or Waltair) is
tropical, with a
rainy season from June to November, due to the monsoon, and a
dry season from December to May. In recent decades, the monsoon has had its onset on average in 11 June. By mid-October, the north-east monsoon begins to blow, which for a few weeks still brings rain, though less than in south-east India.
From late March to early June, before the monsoon,
it is very hot, and the temperature can exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In June 1995, it reached 45.4 °C (113.7 °F), while in May 2002 it reached 45 °C (113 °F). Showers can occur from time to time, especially in May.
From November to February or early March, nights can be cool. The record is 10.5 °C (51 °F), set in January 1962. More recently, the temperature reached 12 °C (53.5 °F) in January 2019.
On the other hand, nights are cool from November to February, and can sometimes be even a bit cold when air masses come from the north.
The city is located in the east of India, in the state of
Andhra Pradesh, at 17 degrees north latitude, on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. To the northwest are the Eastern Ghats.
Visakhapatnam is in the path of
tropical cyclones. Typically, cyclones occur from April to December, with two intensity peaks before and after the monsoon (from late April to early June and in October-November). In October 2014, the city was directly hit by Cyclone Hudhud.
