Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of North Lakhimpur is
subtropical, with pleasantly warm, dry winters from November to February and a long, hot and rainy period from April to mid-October. The monsoon runs from roughly from June to early or mid-October, but from March to May (and more rarely in February), showers occur, which gradually become more intense and frequent.
The city is located in the extreme north-east of India, in the state of
Assam, at 27 degrees north latitude. We are in the northernmost part of the
Brahmaputra plain, closed between the Himalayas to the north and the mountains bordering Burma to the east. To the southwest of North Lakhimpur is Kaziranga National Park, while to the east is Namdapha National Park.
In the rainy season, the Brahmaputra (which passes about 30 km south of the city) often overflows, but sometimes its tributaries that pass in the vicinity of North Lakhimpur do it as well.
Since we are outside of the Indian continental mass, the
warming from March to May is reduced, also because the rains begin earlier. As a result, on average, the hottest period is from June to September.
In
winter, from mid-November to late February or early March, nights are cool, and sometimes even cold. In January 1956, the temperature dropped to 2.7 °C (36.9 °F), but in the last thirty years the cold records have been around 4/5 °C (39/41 °F).
North Lakhimpur is in the path of
tropical cyclones, which come from the Bay of Bengal, usually from mid-April to early December. In general, they are most intense either at the beginning and the end of the period, that is, in May-June and October-November. Since we are far from the coast, the city is not hit by cyclones at full strength, however, they can bring heavy rainfall.
Best Time
The
best time to visit North Lakhimpur is from November to February, being the coolest and driest of the year. In February, temperatures rise a little, and at night it is rarer to get cold than in December and January, but during some years thunderstorms become more frequent, while at the end of the month it can get hot. Sometimes it can get hot in early November as well.
