Climate chart - Madurai
The climate of Madurai is tropical, with a dry season from January to March and a rainy season from September to November. In the other months, the rains are quite irregular, and are generally not abundant. Temperatures are high all year round, and are higher than on the coast, although they drop a bit from November to January.
The city is located in southern India, in the state of Tamil Nadu, at almost 10 degrees north latitude, and on the banks of the Vaigai River.
To the north are the Sirumalai Hills, where the altitude varies between 300 to 1,300 meters (985 and 4,265 feet), beyond which lies the city of Dindigul. Instead, to the northwest we find a mountain range that is part of the Western Ghats, the Palani Hills, where the altitude reaches 2,500 meters (8,200 feet); in this area is the city of Kodaikanal, located at 2,100 meters (6,900 feet) above sea level.
We are in the south-eastern side of India, where the summer monsoon does not arrive because it is hindered by the Western Ghats themselves, especially in the first period, in June and July, when the currents blow more directly from the west. Instead, the rains increase from August or September, when the currents from the east or north-east blow more and more often.

Madurai

Madurai is in the path of tropical cyclones. Typically, cyclones occur from April to December, although the extreme south of India is normally affected only in November and December. In any case, since the sea is warm all year round, in theory they can also form from January to March, perhaps in light form (as tropical storms).

Best Time

The best time to visit Madurai is from late December to late January, as it is the least hot within the dry season. In February and March, it is still the dry season, but it is very hot.
