Climate chart - Jaisalmer
The climate of Jaisalmer is arid subtropical, with a rainy season that runs roughly from July to mid-September.
The city is located in the north-west of India, at nearly 27 degrees north latitude and 230 meters (755 feet) above sea level. We are in the Thar desert, the sandy desert that occupies the western part of Rajasthan, where the Indian monsoon arrives late and produces limited effects. Due to its position in the westernmost part of the state, Jaisalmer is the driest city in India.
From mid-March to early July, before the monsoon, it is very hot. Also, sometimes there can be sandstorms. In the hottest periods, the temperature can reach or exceed 45 °C (113 °F). It reached 49 °C (120 °F) in May 2016 and 48 °C (118.5 °F) in May 2010 and June 2019. Jaisalmer is one of the hottest cities in India.
On the other hand, nights are cool from November to February, and can sometimes be even cold when air masses come from the north. The temperature dropped to -1 °C (30 °F) in January 1978 and to 1 °C (34 °F) in January 2011. However, winter is warmer and sunnier than in New Delhi and the Indo-Gangetic Plain, where fog can sometimes form.
