The climate of Imphal is
subtropical, tempered by altitude, with mild, dry winters from November to February and a long, hot and rainy period from April to October. The mountains partially block the summer monsoon, which is not as intense as in the states of Meghalaya and Tripura.
The city is located in the north-east of India, in the small state of
Manipur (which borders Burma to the east), at almost 25 degrees north latitude and in a valley at 780 meters (2,560 feet) above sea level. South of the city is the Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is home to Lake Loktak. To the north is Mount Laikot, 2,547 meters (8,356 feet) high, which belongs to the Naga Hills.
Since we are outside of the Indian continental mass, the
warming from March to May is reduced, also because the rains begin earlier. As a result, daytime temperatures are very similar from April to October. However, the records were recorded from late April to early June here as well. In late May 2009 and in early June 1979, the temperature reached 35.6 °C (96 °F).
From mid-November to mid-March, also due to the altitude, nights are often
cold. In January 1970, the temperature dropped to -2.7 °C (27 °F); more recently, in January 2013, it dropped to 0 °C (32 °F).
Imphal is in the path of
tropical cyclones, which come from the Bay of Bengal, usually from mid-April to early December. In general, they are most intense either at the beginning and the end of the period, that is, in May-June and October-November. Since we are far from the coast, the city is not hit by cyclones at full strength, however, they can bring heavy rainfall.
Best Time
The
best time to visit Imphal is from November to February, since it is the dry season. You can also choose the month of March, in which the night temperatures are higher, and the rains are a little more frequent but are still quite rare.
