Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Agartala is
subtropical, with a very mild or pleasantly warm, dry winter from mid-November to February and a long, hot and rainy season from April to October.
The city is the capital of the state of
Tripura and is located in the north-east of India, in the part that lies east of Bangladesh, and on the border with the latter.
Since we are outside of the Indian continental mass, the warming from March to May is reduced, also because the rains begin earlier: already in April (and more rarely in March) there are heavy showers, and the monsoon begins in May. However, in dry periods it can get very hot. In late May and early June 1979, the temperature reached 40 °C (104 °F). More recently, it hit 39.4 °C (102.9 °F) in April 2014.
In
winter, from mid-November to late February or early March, nights are cool, and sometimes even cold. In January 1964, the temperature dropped to 3.5 °C (38.3 °F), while more recently, it dropped to 4 °C (39 °F) in January and February 1995, and to 4.7 °C (40.5 °F) in January 2003.
In addition, from November to January,
fog can form at night and in the early morning.
In the rainy period, especially from May to July, there can be floods. Furthermore, Agartala is in the path of
tropical cyclones, which come from the Bay of Bengal, usually from mid-April to early December. In general, they are most intense either at the beginning and the end of the period, that is, in May-June and October-November. In December, cyclones are rare, but sometimes they can still arrive, for example, in early December 2021 there were heavy rains caused by cyclone Jawad.
Best Time
The
best time to visit Agartala is from November to February, since it is the dry season. In early November it can still be very hot, moreover, from November to early December, although the weather is generally nice, a cyclone can occasionally still pass. In February the temperature rises, cold and fog at night are rarer, however, especially in the second half of the month, it can sometimes get very hot.
