Climate chart - Uummannaq
In Uummannaq, there is a polar, with very cold winters, during which the temperature is usually below freezing, and quite mild summers.
Uummannaq (formerly Omenak) is a village of 1,400 inhabitants, located in the west of Greenland, in the municipality of Avannaata, on a small island, at almost 71 degrees north latitude. The island is home to a very steep mountain, 1,170 meters (3,840 feet) high.
The weather data is taken from the airport, located in the nearby village of Qaarsut.

Precipitation is quite scarce, since it amounts to 280 millimeters (11 inches) per year, and has a minimum in winter and a maximum from July to November. In winter it almost always occurs in the form of snow, in spring and autumn it alternates rain and snow, while in summer, at least in July and August, rainfall prevails.

The winter is long, in fact the average temperature is below freezing from October to April. The average temperature in February and March, the coldest months, is around -14 °C (7 °F).
The wind, which can blow strongly, can increase the feeling of cold.
The ground is normally covered in snow. Snowfall is frequent, although it is usually light due to the low level of precipitation.
During cold waves, the temperature drops almost every year below -25 °C (-13 °F), and once every few years below -30 °C (-22 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is quite mild. This is the only season in which the average temperature is above freezing even at night, but since the daily average does not exceed 10 °C (50 °F) in any month, the climate is considered as polar. The average in July is around 9 °C (48 °F).
In July and August, rainfall is quite frequent, and these are the only months in which it almost never snows. In June, on the other hand, especially in the first half, it can sometimes snow.
During this season, fog forms quite often.
Sometimes there can be brief very mild periods, one to three days long, during which the temperature can reach around 20 °C (68 °F).

In Uummannaq, the sea is always very cold, and on colder periods it can freeze, more likely in February and March, while during the rest of the year, even in summer, there are icebergs floating, coming from the mainland's glaciers. We recall that the sea, being salty, freezes at about -2 °C (28.5 °F).

As for the length of the days, since we are north of the Arctic Circle, there is a period, called polar night, in which the sun does not rise, and which goes from November 22 to January 19.
Instead, the period of the midnight sun, during which the sun never sets, goes from May 20 to July 23. The white nights, in which it does not get completely dark all night, occur before and after this period, from April 13 to August 30.
