Climate chart - Station Nord
At the Nord (North) station there is a polar climate, with long, frigid winters and short, cold summers. According to the Köppen classification, the climate is polar tundra (ET), but since the average temperature is slightly above freezing for only three months of the year, it is close to the climate of eternal ice (EF).
Nord (Station Nord) is a military base and a scientific station located in the far north-east of Greenland, in Crown Prince Christian Land, on the coast of the Wandel Sea (part of the Arctic Ocean), 924 kilometers (574 miles) from the North Pole, and at 81 degrees north latitude.
In this area there is a small ice cap, separated from the main Greenland ice cap. To the south is a mountain range, the Princess Elizabeth Alps.

Precipitation is quite scarce, since it amounts to 330 millimeters (13 inches) per year, and has a relative maximum in September and October. For most of the year it occurs in the form of snow, while in summer it can also occur in the form of rain.

The wind often blows, and can reduce visibility, by blowing snow. Fog often forms in summer.

On the coldest days of the year, which are usually recorded from January to March, the temperature drops below -40 °C (-40 °F) almost every year. The coldest record is -51 °C (-59.8 °F), set in February 1961. In recent decades, the record is -47.9 °C (-54.2 °F), set in January 1991.

In summer, there can sometimes be mild periods, usually of short duration, in which the temperature can exceed 10 °C (50 °F), and occasionally 15 °C (59 °F). In July 2003 it reached 17 °C (62.6 °F).

The Nord station is not accessible by ship because the sea is frozen most of the year, however, in some years it can partially melt at the end of summer (and this is becoming more frequent due to global warming).

As for the length of the days, since we are far north of the Polar Circle, the polar night is long, and goes from October 17 to February 24.
Instead, the period of the midnight sun, during which the sun never sets, goes from April 9 to September 2. Before and after this period, the white nights, in which it does not get completely dark all night, last more than six months, from March 12 to October 1.
