Climate chart - Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaq has a subarctic climate, with long, cold winters and mild summers.
Kangerlussuaq (Søndre Strømfjord in Danish) is a village of 500 inhabitants located in western Greenland, in the municipality of Qeqqata, inside a fjord, about 130 km (80 mi) east of Sisimiut and at 67 degrees north latitude. About 20 km (12 mi) to the east is the Russell Glacier, part of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
The river Qinnguata Kuussua, which passes through the city, carries water from the glacier to the fjord. In summer, when the ice partially melts, the river is subject to flooding.

Precipitation is scarce, amounting to 170 millimeters (6.6 inches) per year, and has a minimum in winter and a maximum from July to September. In winter it almost always occurs in the form of snow, in spring and autumn rain and snow alternate, while in summer rain prevails.

The winter is long, in fact the average temperature is below freezing from October to April. Winter temperatures are significantly lower than those of the towns located directly on the coast of Greenland. The average in February, the coldest month, is -20 °C (-4 °F).
The wind, which can blow strongly, can increase the feeling of cold.
The ground is normally covered in snow. Snowfall is frequent, although it is generally light due to the low level of precipitation.
During cold waves, the temperature drops below -35 °C (-31 °F) almost every year. The coldest record is -47.2 °C (-53 °F), set in January 1983. More recently, the temperature dropped to -46.8 °C (-52.2 °F) in February 2008. In February 1984, the daily average was -36.7 °C (-34.1 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is mild. We are in one of the few areas of Greenland where the average temperature of the warmest month exceeds, albeit slightly, 10 °C (50 °F), so the climate is considered subarctic rather than polar. The average in July is 11 °C (52 °F).
In July and August, rain is quite frequent, and these are the only months in which it almost never snows. In June and September, on the other hand, it can sometimes snow.
In this season, fog can sometimes form.
Sometimes there can be very mild periods, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 20 °C (68 °F), and unlike on the coast, this happens every year. The highest record is 25.5 °C (77.9 °F), set in July 1990.

As for the length of the days, even though we are just north of the Arctic Circle, the sun rises even on the shortest days of the year due to the phenomenon of refraction. To be more precise, on the days of the winter solstice, that is, December 21 or 22, the sun is on the horizon at midday, and the day lasts an hour and a half.
Instead, the period of the midnight sun, during which the sun never sets, goes from June 2 to July 10. The white nights, in which it is not completely dark all night, occur before and after this period, from April 19 to August 24.
