Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours

In Ittoqqortoormiit, there is a
polar tundra climate, with freezing winters and cold summers.
Ittoqqortoormiit (or Scoresbysund in Danish) is a village of 345 inhabitants, belonging to the municipality of Sermersooq, located in eastern Greenland, at 70 degrees north latitude.
We are in the southern part of a peninsula, Jameson Land, to the south of which is the
Scoresby Sund (or Kangertittivaq), the largest fjord in the world.
North of the peninsula begins the
North-East Greenland National Park, the largest in the world.
The area is mountainous, and in the immediate vicinity of the town there are mountains, covered with perennial ice, which exceed 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) in height, while further north-west, the
Stauning Alps reach 2,842 meters (9,324 ft).
The east coast of Greenland, crossed by a cold current, subject to the katabatic wind called
piterak, and with the ice cap that reaches almost everywhere to the sea, is decidedly less hospitable than the west coast, where the capital and the main settlements are located. In fact, Ittoqqortoormiit is a small and isolated place.
Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to 515 millimeters (20 inches) per year, and reaches a maximum in autumn and winter. In winter it almost always occurs in the form of snow, in spring and autumn rain and snow alternate, while in summer, at least in July and August, rain prevails.
The
winter is long, in fact the average temperature is below freezing from October to May. The average temperature in February and March, the coldest months, is -13.5 °C (7.5 °F).
The
wind, which can blow strongly, with gusts exceeding 100 kph (62 mph), can increase the feeling of cold.
The ground is normally covered in snow.
snowfall is frequent, and can sometimes be heavy.
During
cold waves, the temperature drops to around -25 °C (-13 °F) or below. In recent decades, the coldest record is -36.9 °C (-34.4 °F), recorded in January 2000.
Sometimes there can be short
mild periods, from one to three days, during which the temperature can reach 17/18 °C (63/64 °F). The temperature almost never reaches 20 °C (68 °F), however, in August 2005 it reached 21 °C (70 °F).
At Ittoqqortoormiit the
sea is always very cold, and is frozen for about nine months of the year. In summer, icebergs from the glaciers on the mainland float on the sea. In recent years, due to climate change, the period in which the sea is frozen has been decreasing.
