The climate of Freiburg is semi-continental, characterized by cold, gray winters and warm summers, during which thunderstorms can erupt.
Freiburg im Breisgau is located in the extreme southwest of Germany, in Baden-Württemberg, at 280 meters (920 feet) above sea level, 15 km (9 mi) away from the Rhine valley that marks the border with France, and 45 km (28 mi) north of the Swiss border. In Germany, Freiburg is known for having a mild and sunny climate, at least compared to the rest of the country.
Nearby is the Black Forest, whose highest mountain, Feldberg, is 1,493 meters (4,898 feet) high.

The winter is cold and gray. There may be relatively mild periods, when Atlantic currents prevail, and other colder periods, when the temperature drops below freezing and it can snow.
Sometimes, there can be cold spells, in which temperatures can drop as low as -10 °C (14 °F) or even below. The cold record is -22.4 °C (-8.3 °F), set in February 1956. More recently, the temperature dropped to -20 °C (-4 °F) in December 2009.

In summer, the temperatures are generally pleasant and lend themselves to outdoor activities, although sometimes there can be rains and thunderstorms.
At times, hot periods can occur, generally of short duration, which in recent years are becoming more frequent due to global warming, and in which the temperature can exceed 32 °C (90 °F). On the hottest days of the year, the temperature typically reaches 35/36 °C (95/97 °F). The heat record is 40.2 °C (104.4 °F), set in August 2003.
