Climate chart - Kutaisi
In Kutaisi, the climate is humid subtropical, with quite mild winters, hot summers, and abundant rainfall.

The capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis, Kutaisi is located in the center-west of Georgia (with 145,000 inhabitants, it is the third in the country), in the region of Imereti (of which it is the capital), and at 42 degrees north latitude.
The city is located on a triangular plain, bordered to the north by the Caucasus range, and to the south by the Meskheti mountains, belonging to the Lesser Caucasus.
The Rioni River descends from the Caucasus Mountains in the north, passes through the city of Kutaisi and then turns west, passes through Samtredia and finally flows into the Black Sea at Poti.

The climate of Kutaisi is similar to that of the Black Sea coast, which is located 85 km (52 mi) to the west, however, it is a bit more continental and less rainy.

Precipitation is still quite abundant, as it amounts to about 1,360 mm (53.5 in) per year. The rainiest season is autumn, however, rainfall exceeds 100 mm (4 in) per month from September to March.

There can be very mild periods, during which the temperature reaches and exceeds 20 °C (68 °F) even in the middle of winter.
However, there can also be cold periods, with temperatures close to freezing, in which snow or rain mixed with snow can fall. Since the winter is rainy, heavy snowfall can occur under certain conditions.
On the coldest nights, the temperature drops below freezing, although usually only slightly. More rarely, it drops to lower values. The coldest record is -13.1 °C (8.4 °F), set in January 1950. In recent decades, the temperature dropped to -8.5 °C (16.5 °F) at the end of February 1985, to -9.8 °C (14.4 °F) in February 1993, and to -9.2 °C (15.5 °F) in January 2017.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and quite sunny, however, rain and thunderstorms are quite frequent even in this season. The average for August, the hottest month, is 25.5 °C (78 °F).
Unlike on the coast, there can be very hot periods, during which the temperature exceeds 35 °C (95 °F), and sometimes even 40 °C (104 °F).
