The climate of Nancy is semi-continental, characterized by cold and gray winters, accompanied by frequent snowfalls, although generally not abundant, and warm summers, with some hot days, and with some chance of thunderstorms.
The city is located at 200 meters (650 feet) above sea level, in the north-east of France, in Lorraine, which together with Alsace is the coldest region of France in winter.

The winter is cold and gray. There may be relatively mild periods, when Atlantic currents prevail, and other colder periods, when the temperature drops below freezing and it can snow.
Sometimes, there can be cold spells, in which temperatures can drop as low as -10 °C (14 °F) or even below. The coldest record is -24.8 °C (-12.6 °F) and was set in February 1956.

In summer, the temperatures are generally pleasant and lend themselves to outdoor activities, although sometimes there can be rains and thunderstorms.
At times, hot periods can occur, generally of short duration, which in recent years are becoming more frequent due to global warming, and in which the temperature can exceed 32 °C (90 °F). The highest record is 40 °C (104 °F) and was set in July 2019.
