Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Hyères is
Mediterranean, with mild, relatively rainy winters and hot, sunny summers, sometimes sultry, but tempered by the breeze.
The city, also known as Hyères les Palmiers, is located in the south of France, on the Mediterranean coast, in the Var department, and in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region (or PACA). According to some, it marks the westernmost point of the French Riviera.
Given the location, the city is particularly
mild, like the rest of the Côte d'Azur, but it is also
windy, since it receives the mistral that descends from the Rhone valley (but less than in Avignon and Marseille), but also the sea breeze in summer, the warm wind from the south, and the cold wind from the east. South of Hyères, the Giens Peninsula, Porquerolles Island and the Golden Islands (Port-Cros, île de Bagaud and île du Levant) are even windier.
Winter, from December to February, is mild, with sunny periods alternating with rainy periods. Even if the temperature is not very low, when the mistral blows, the sensation of cold increases.
On the contrary, when the wind blows from Russia, there can be cold waves. However, snow is very rare, and it may not fall for several years in a row.
Generally, in the coldest nights of the year, the temperature drops to around -2 °C (28 °F), however, on colder winters, it has dropped to lower values. The temperature dropped to -6 °C (21 °F) in February 1963 and in January 1985, to -7 °C (19.5 °F) in February 1986, and to -4 °C (25 °F) in February 2010 and in February 2012.
Summer is hot and sunny, with very rare rains. There are hot and sultry periods, in which the daytime temperature reaches or exceed 32 °C (90 °F).
Hyères is quite sheltered from the heat waves of African origin that have recently been affecting France, and generally the temperature does not go above 35 °C (95 °F) on the hottest days of the year. However, the temperature reached 42 °C (107.5 °F) in July 1982 (but it was an isolated episode), 38 °C (100.5 °F) in July 1983, "only" 36 °C (97 °F) in August 2003 (when there was a historic heat wave in France), 37 °C (98.5 °F) in July 2007, 38 °C (100.5 °F) in August 2017, and 37 °C (98.5 °F) in July 2019.
The
average temperature of the coldest month (January) is of 8.8 °C (48 °F), that of the warmest month (August) is of 23.1 °C (74 °F). Here are the average temperatures.

Best Time
The
best time to visit Hyeres is the
spring, from mid-April to mid-June. September is also a good month, but it is quite rainy. Summer, from mid-June to August, can be hot and muggy, even though it's the best time for those who also want to swim in the sea. Winter is generally mild, but it can sometimes get cold and it can rain.
