Climate chart - Rijeka
The climate of Rijeka can be described as transitional Mediterranean, in fact, winter is a bit colder than in the Mediterranean climate, while summer is rainier.
Rijeka (or Fiume) is located on the northern coast of Croatia, east of Istria. A short distance away, in the Kvarner bay, are the islands of Krk and Cres.
The city is particularly rainy because it is located on the coast and is exposed to the sea winds, but it is also at the foot of the Dinaric Alps.
The winter, from December to February, is quite mild, although it is not as mild as on the southern coast of Croatia. The sirocco can bring mild and rainy days.
When the bora, the cold northeast wind, blows, the temperature can drop by several degrees. During the most intense cold spells, the temperature can drop as low as -8/-9 °C (16/18 °F). The coldest record is -13 °C (8.5 °F), recorded in February 1956. In January 1985, the temperature dropped to -11.5 °C (11.5 °F).
During these cold periods, snowfalls can also occur.

The summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with some afternoon thunderstorms, and a few rainy days, more likely in June.
Generally, the heat is not excessive and the breeze blows from the sea, however, there can be very hot and sultry periods, with highs of 34/35 °C (93/95 °F) and beyond. The record heat is 40 °C (104 °F), recorded in July 2007 and July 2015.
