The climate of Hvar is
Mediterranean, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The island of Hvar, in Italian Lesina, is located in Dalmatia, on the Adriatic coast.
The
winter, from December to February, is mild, and is characterized by sunny periods, alternating with periods of bad weather. A strong southerly wind can blow.
Although the winter is generally mild, there can sometimes be
very cold days due to air masses coming from the interior of the Balkan Peninsula. In these cases, the temperature can drop to 0 °C (32 °F) or below at night, while the maximum can remain around 5 °C (41 °F) or below.
Snow is very rare. On the hills of the island, which reach 587 meters (1,925 feet), snow can sometimes be seen, while on the coast, several years pass between one snowfall and another. However, in February 2018, 5 centimeters (2 inches) of snow fell, while in February 2021, a thinner layer of snow was deposited.
The cold record is of -7 °C (19.5 °F), recorded in January 1942, while in January 2017, the temperature dropped to -5 °C (23 °F).
The
summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with some afternoon thunderstorms, and a few rainy days, more likely in June.
Sometimes, there can be very hot and sultry periods, with highs of 34/35 °C (93/95 °F). The highest record is 37.5 °C (99.5 °F), recorded in August 1956 and 1998.
Best Time
The
best times to visit Hvar are spring and autumn, namely the months of May and September. In June, the weather is often excellent, but it can sometimes get hot, especially in the second half of the month.
To go to the beach, the best months are July and August. In June, the sea is still a bit cool.
