The climate of Taiyuan is
continental semi-arid, with very cold, dry winters and hot, rainy summers.
The city is the capital of the Shanxi province and is located at almost 38 degrees north latitude, in a valley at 800 meters (2,600 feet) above sea level, on the banks of the Fen River, a tributary of the Yellow River. In the past, it was the capital under several Chinese dynasties.
The
winter is dry and sunny. Even though the temperatures are low, snowfalls are rare. During the most intense cold spells, the temperature can drop to around -20 °C (-4 °F).
Spring is an unstable season, with temperature changes and strong winds, which can trigger sandstorms.
The
summer is the only season to experience significant rains. Despite the altitude, in periods of good weather there can be heat waves, in which the temperature can reach or exceed 35 °C (95 °F).
