Climate chart - Nantong
The climate of Nantong is temperate, with relatively cold winters and hot, humid and rainy summers.
The city, also known as Tongzhou, is located in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, at 32 degrees north latitude and about 40 km (25 mi) from the coast. Across the Yangtze River, closer to the coast, is Shanghai.

Winter, from December to February, is quite cold: the average January temperature is of 4 °C (39 °F).
There may be very cold periods, with temperatures around freezing even during the day, and with some chance of snow. Occasionally, the minimum temperature can drop to -10 °C (14 °F).
In other situations, instead, the temperature becomes mild, around 18/20 °C (64/68 °F).
At night, fog can form.

Spring, from March to May, is initially mild, and becomes gradually warmer. Sometimes it can already get hot: in late April, the temperature can sometimes exceed 30 °C (86 °F), and in May, 35 °C (95 °F). Spring is a more unstable season than autumn.

Summer, from June to September, is hot and muggy. Both the heat island effect of the big city and the humidity make the heat uncomfortable, especially in July and August.
The periods of good weather can be sweltering, with highs around 37/38 °C (99/100 °F) or more and tropical nights.
Summer is the rainiest season. Sometimes there can be particularly heavy rains.

Autumn, in October and November, is initially mild, and gradually becomes cooler, and then quite cold at night by November.

Nantong

From July to early October (and occasionally also in the second half of June), Nantong can be affected by typhoons, the tropical cyclones of South-East Asia, although this area of China is less exposed than the south.

Best Time

It is not easy to find the best time to visit Nantong. Since spring is more rainy, you can choose autumn, especially from late September to early November, which is generally a mild or pleasantly warm period; it must be said that, in this period, the arrival of a typhoon can not be excluded.
