Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Hohhot is
continental semi-arid (according to the Köppen classification, cold semi-arid or steppe climate - BSk), with cold, dry winters and hot, rainy summers.
Hohhot ("Blue City"), formerly Kweisui, is a city of 3,500,000 inhabitants located in northern China, in the autonomous region of
Inner Mongolia, of which it is the capital, on the Hetao plateau, at 1,065 meters (3,500 feet) above sea level and at almost 41 degrees north latitude. The capital, Beijing, is located almost 400 km to the southeast.
The city is located at the foot of the Daqing Shan ("Great Blue Mountains") mountain range, which rises just over 2,000 meters (6,500 ft). North of these mountains, about 90 km (55 mi) north of Hohhot, at 1,500 meters (5,000 ft) above sea level, are the Xilamuren (or Zhaohe) grasslands, a popular summer tourist destination.
In
winter, from December to February, the temperature is several degrees below freezing: the average in January is around -10 °C (14 °F). The sun shines quite often even in this season, and because of the dry climate, snowfalls are rare. The wind can bring dust and sand from the deserts of Mongolia.
During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -25 °C (-13 °F) or below. In January 2021, it dropped to -30 °C (-22 °F). The record is -32.8 °C (-27 °F), set in February 1951.
Summer, from June to August, is hot, with an average of 23 °C (73.5 °F) in July, and is also relatively rainy, due to the Asian monsoon. In fact, most of the year's rainfall falls from June to September.
Due to the altitude, nights can be cool, especially in June and the second half of August.
Despite the altitude, in good weather there can be very hot periods. The temperature usually does not exceed 35 °C (95 °F), but in July 2010 it reached 38.9 °C (102 °F).
Spring, from March to May, is characterized by clashes of air masses, which can cause gusts of wind and sudden changes in temperature. Sometimes the temperature can exceed 30 °C (86 °F) already in April. On the other hand,
autumn, from September to November, is a calmer season, although the temperature drops rapidly.
