Climate chart - Guilin
The climate of Guilin is humid subtropical, with mild winters and hot, muggy and rainy summers.
The city, famous for its caves, is located in southern China, in the autonomous region of Guangxi (or Kwanghsi), on the banks of the Li River (Li Jiang), at 25 degrees north latitude and 160 meters (525 feet) above sea level. Within the city limits are verdant hills of just over 400 meters (1,300 feet), protected in the Guangxi Guilin National Forest Park. Just outside the city is Mount Yao, 900 meters (2,950 feet) high, reachable by a cable car, from where it is possible to observe the panorama of the city. Around the city there are mountains that exceed 1,500 meters (4,900 feet).
There is no dry season, however, the wettest months are May and June, the period of the "plum rains", while in winter the rains are not abundant, but are progressively more frequent. However, there can sometimes be heavy rains even in July and August, perhaps caused by the remains of a typhoon coming from the South China Sea.
The sun does not shine very often, however, it shines more often from July to September, while from January to April the sky is often cloudy.
Even though the winter is mild, there can sometimes be cold periods, during which the maximum temperature remains around 5 °C (41 °F). Every now and then, as happened for example in December 2018, it can even snow. Snow is more frequent and more durable on the hills.
The summer, from June to September, is very hot and muggy. In August 2022, the temperature reached 39.2 °C (102.6 °F), and the average maximum was 36.8 °C (98.2 °F).
The city can be hit by typhoons, the tropical cyclones of Southeast Asia, even though it is located quite far from the coast, which is the area most at risk. Typhoons typically occur in this area from June to October or early November.

Best Time

To visit Guilin you can choose autumn, and in particular from mid-October to the end of November, since spring, although mild, is very rainy. It must be said that a typhoon can still arrive until early November, even though, as we have said, the city is located far from the coast.
