The climate of Dalian is
continental, with cold, dry winters and warm to hot, rainy summers. The bulk of the rain falls from May to September, with a maximum in July and August. However, the rains are irregular from one year to another. Since the winter is dry, snowfalls are quite rare.
The city is located in the north-east of China, in the province of Liaoning, at almost 39 degrees north latitude, on the tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, which separates the Bohai Sea from the Korea Bay.
In winter, the mitigating effect of the sea is reduced because cold currents prevail, which come from the interior of China and Mongolia, and during cold spells the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F) or even below. In the summer, on the other hand, the monsoon brings warm and humid currents of tropical origin. However, the climate here is slightly milder than in the inland areas and in Beijing, and it's cooler especially in spring, when the sea retains the cold after the winter.
The city is
windy. In winter, and especially in spring (March to May), the city can be affected by the yellow dust coming from the deserts of Mongolia and of Central Asia, which forms a characteristic haze and brings breathing problems and eye irritation.
Fog can sometimes form, especially in spring and summer.
From July to early October (and occasionally also in the second half of June), Dalian can be affected by
typhoons, the tropical cyclones of South-East Asia, although this area of China is less exposed than the south, moreover, typhoons generally arrive weakened at these latitudes.
Best Time
The best times to visit Dalian are spring and autumn, in order to avoid both the cold of winter and the heat and the rains of summer, and in particular, the month of May and from mid-September to mid-October.
