Climate in Coyhaique (Chile)

Coyhaique's climate is oceanic, with cold, rainy winters and cool summers.
The city is located in southern Chile, at 45 degrees south latitude, 350 meters above sea level, and about 50 km (30 mi) southeast of Puerto Aysén.
Coyhaique is one of the few Chilean cities located east of the Andes. At this latitude, the Andes are not very high, however, there are peaks that reach 1,800 meters (5,900 ft). Above 1,200 meters (3,900 ft), the climate becomes subpolar and trees cannot grow, and the mountains are often covered with snow. Further south, on the other hand, there is a very high mountain, Mount San Valentin, which reaches 4,058 meters in height (13,313 ft).
The presence of the mountains to the west reduces the influence of sea currents, so the city is exposed to polar cold waves, when an air mass of Antarctic origin settles on the ground. In June 2002, the temperature dropped to -19 °C (-2 °F).
On the other hand, the mountains partly protect the city from the rains, which are still frequent all year round, but especially in autumn and winter, from April to September. In winter, from May to September it can snow, and sometimes snowfalls can be abundant.
On the other hand, fog can form in stable periods.
