Climate chart - Prince Rupert
Prince Rupert has an oceanic climate, with quite cold winters, cool summers, and frequent rainfall throughout the year.
Prince Rupert is a city of 12,000 inhabitants located in western Canada, in British Columbia, in the northernmost part of the Pacific coast, on a small island, Kaien Island, in an area of fjords, and at 54 degrees north latitude. We are in the narrow relatively mild, very humid area of Canada, the one located west of the mountains. In fact, to the east are the mountains of the coastal range, which are covered with perennial snow above 1,200 meters (3,900 feet).
About 20 km (12 mi) to the south is the mouth of the Skeena River.

Precipitation is decidedly abundant. With 2,600 millimeters (102 inches) per year, Prince Rupert is the rainiest city in Canada. Further north, however, in Alaska, there is an even rainier area (see Ketchikan, where precipitation reaches almost 4 meters or 157 inches per year).
The rainiest period is from September to January, however, rainfall exceeds 100 mm (4 in) per month even in the least rainy months, June and July.
Prince Rupert is also one of the least sunny places in Canada. In addition to clouds, frequent all year round, in autumn and winter fog can form.

Although the winter is not very cold, with an average above freezing even in January, the humidity and wind can increase the feeling of cold.
Although most of the precipitation falls in the form of rain, it can sometimes snow. On average, 92 centimeters (36 inches) of snow fall per year. Snowfall typically occurs from November to March.
In addition, there can sometimes be cold waves, during which the temperature can drop to -15 °C (5 °F) or below. The coldest record is -24.4 °C (-11.9 °F), set in January 1965. In late November 1985, during one of the intense early cold spells that can occur in western North America, the temperature dropped to -20.6 °C (-5.1 °F). In recent decades, the record is -21.1 °C (-6 °F), set in January 2012.

Summer is cool, so much so that the temperature exceeds 20 °C (68 °F) for a few days a year, and reaches 30 °C (86 °F) only occasionally.
