Climate chart - Inuvik
The climate of Inuvik is subarctic, with long, freezing winters and mild summers.
Inuvik is a town of about 3,000 inhabitants, located in Canada, in the Northwest Territories, in region 1, near the delta of the Mackenzie River, about 110 km (68 mi) away from the coast of the Beaufort Sea, and at 68 degrees north latitude.
Inuvik was born in the 50s with the name of New Aklavik, in fact the population of the village of Aklavik, which is located about 50 km (30 mi) to the southwest and is subject to flooding, was supposed to move there, but then this did not happen.

Precipitation is scarce, amounting to 250 millimeters (10 inches) per year. The rainiest season is summer, while in winter there is frequent but not abundant snowfall.
On average, about one and a half meters (59 inches) of snow fall per year. It usually snows from late September to late May or early June.

On the coldest days of the year, the temperature drops to -35 °C (-31 °F) or below every year. The coldest record is -56.7 °C (-70.1 °F), set in February 1968. After 2000, however, the temperature has not yet reached -45 °C (-49 °F).
During cold air outbreaks, the wind is able to increase the feeling of cold. The record for wind chill (felt temperature) is -67 °C (-88.6 °F).

The average temperature exceeds 10 °C (50 °F) in the three months of summer, from June to August, which is why coniferous forests can grow in the area (which no longer happens going north), and we speak of a subarctic climate and not of a polar climate.
Sometimes, there can be short hot periods, during which the temperature can reach around 30 °C (86 °F), and more rarely exceed this value. The highest record is 34.8 °C (94.6 °F), set in August 2024.

As for the length of the days, since we are north of the Polar Circle, there is a period, called polar night, in which the sun does not rise, and which goes from December 5 to January 5.
Instead, the period of the midnight sun, during which the sun never sets, runs from May 24 to July 18. Before and after this period, the white nights, in which it does not get completely dark all night, run from April 15 to August 27.
