Climate chart - Fort Nelson
The climate of Fort Nelson is cold continental, with freezing winters and very mild to warm summers.
Since there are four months with an average temperature above 10 °C (50 °F), according to the Köppen classification, the climate is humid continental with warm summers (Dfb), even though it is close to the subarctic climate.

Fort Nelson is a town of 3,300 inhabitants located in north-western Canada, at 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level and at almost 59 degrees north latitude. In the area there are three rivers, Muskwa, Fort Nelson and Prohet.
We are in the coldest part of British Columbia, the one farthest from the ocean and east of the Rocky Mountains. However, sometimes the chinook, the wind that comes down from the mountains, can bring the temperature above freezing even in winter.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to 450 millimeters (17.7 inches) per year, however, in summer, the rainiest season, it is moderate. In winter, snowfall is frequent, but generally not abundant.
On average, 190 centimeters (75 in) of snow fall per year. It usually snows from October to April.

On the coldest days of the year, the temperature usually drops to -35 °C (-31 °F) or below. The coldest record is -51.7 °C (-61.1 °F), recorded in early February 1947.

In summer, the difference in temperature between night and day is often significant. In addition, there can be hot periods, during which the temperature can exceed 30 °C (86 °F). The highest record is 37.2 °C (99 °F), set during the exceptional heat wave that hit Western Canada in late June 2021.

As for the length of the days, since we are south of the Arctic Circle, the sun also rises on the shortest days of the year, and sets on the longest.
However, the white nights, in which it is not completely dark all night, occur from May 17 to July 26.
