Climate chart - Banff
Banff has a subarctic climate, with cold winters, during which the temperature is usually below freezing, and mild summers.
Banff is a town of 8,000 inhabitants, located in southwestern Canada, in the province of Alberta, in a valley between the Canadian Rockies, at 1,400 meters (4,900 feet) above sea level, and at 51 degrees north latitude. About 100 km (62 mi) to the east is the province's largest city, Calgary.
Banff is the main center of the Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes glacial lakes such as Lake Minnewanka, waterfalls, forests and mountain peaks covered with eternal snow.
There are also some ski resorts: Sunshine Village, where you can usually ski from December to mid-April, Mt. Norquay, and Lake Louise, where the ski season is longer and goes from early November to early or mid-May.
The highest peak in the park is Mount Forbes, at 3,612 metres (11,850 feet).
In some areas of the park there are seasonal restrictions for certain activities, such as hiking, biking or access by car, in winter due to the presence of snow on some trails, from spring to autumn to avoid disturbing the bears, as can be seen on the Government of Canada website.

Precipitation in Banff is not abundant, with an annual average of 455 millimetres (18 inches). The wettest season is summer, especially early in June, due to afternoon thunderstorms.
In winter, snowfall occurs frequently, although it is not usually heavy. However, an average of 185 cm (73 in) of snow falls per year. It usually snows from October to April, though at times it can also in late September and early May (obviously, the higher elevations in the park have a longer period of snowfall).

On the coldest days of the year, temperatures drop to -30 °C (-22 °F) or below most years. The coldest record is -51.2 °C (-60.1 °F), set in January 1996.

In summer, temperatures are pleasant during the day, but at night they drop significantly.
Sometimes, there can be short hot periods, during which the temperature can reach around 30/32 °C (86/90 °F), and more rarely exceed these values. The highest record is 37.8 °C (100 °F), set during the exceptional heat wave that hit Canada at the end of June 2021.
