The city is the capital of the state of Bahia and is located in the east of Brazil, at 13 degrees south latitude, on a peninsula that on one side overlooks the Bay of All Saints and on the other side the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. In the bay there is the mouth of the Paraguaçu river, as well as several islands, the main of which is Itaparica.
Temperatures are quite stable, although they drop a bit in the austral winter, from June to September.
