Petrolina's climate is tropical semi-arid, with a relatively rainy season from January to March and a dry season from May to October.
The city is located in the state of Pernambuco, 380 meters (1,245 feet) above sea level, on the banks of the São Francisco River. Across the river lies the city of Juazeiro. To the west of the city the river widens into the Lago de Sobradinho, a lake created by a dam built in the 1970s.
We are in the north-east of Brazil, the driest area of the country. The sun shines very often, even almost 3,000 hours a year.
Temperatures drop a bit in the austral winter, from June to August.
