Climate chart - Curitiba
The climate of Curitiba is subtropical, with mild winters (June to August) and warm summers (December to March). There is no real dry season, however, winter is the driest season and summer is the wettest season.
The city is the capital of the state of Paraná and is located in southern Brazil, at 25 degrees south latitude and 900 meters (2,950 feet) above sea level. The coast of the Atlantic Ocean is about 70 km (44 mi) away.
In winter, from June to August (but sometimes also in May and September) there can be cold waves from the south, during which the temperature can drop to the freezing point or a little below at night, and can remain around 10/12 °C (50/54 °F) during the day. In July 1975, the temperature dropped to -5 °C (23 °F), while in July 2000 it dropped below freezing for eight days. Sometimes it can even snow, as it happened in July 1975 (when there was even an accumulation), in July 2013 and in August 2020.
Fog can form all year round at night and in the early morning (not surprisingly, a nickname for Curitiba is "the city of eternal fog").
Sometimes there can be cool days even in summer, with highs of 20 °C (68 °F) even in January and February.
