Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
In Oruro, there is a
semi-arid temperate climate of the highlands, with mild and fairly stable daytime temperatures throughout the year, but with strong cold nights, especially during the austral winter, from May to August, when they normally drop below freezing. Indeed, Oruro is famous in Bolivia for being a very cold city.
The city is located on the Andean plateau, roughly halfway between La Paz and Sucre, and at 3,700 meters (12,100 feet) above sea level. South of the city are the salt lakes Uru Uru and Poopó.
The
rains are not abundant, and are concentrated in summer, from December to March, while the winter is dry and sunny.
At night,
fog can form all year round, but especially in summer.
The
difference in temperature between night and day is considerable, especially in winter. During the day, the tropical mountain sun warms the ground strongly, but after sunset the temperature plunges by many degrees.
Although the
winter is dry, and during the day the temperature usually rises a lot, sometimes it can even snow, as happened on July 4, 2015. On 7 August 2008, it snowed and the maximum was only 3 °C (37.5 °F), while on 13 June 2013, it was 4 °C (39 °F).
Best Time
The
best time to visit Oruro is from April to October, as it is the dry season. The winter, from May to August or September, is dry and sunny, but nights are very cold. In April and October, the rains are a little more frequent, but nights are a little milder.
