Climate chart - Oodnadatta
The climate of Oodnadatta is subtropical desert, with mild, dry winters (during which it can get cold at night) and very hot summers, during which good weather prevails but some thunderstorms can break out. The sun shines all year round.
The village is located in the Australian Outback, in the state of South Australia, at 27 degrees south latitude and 120 meters (390 feet) above sea level.
The Oodnadatta Track is a dirt track that connects Marla west to Oodnadatta and then southeast to William Creek and Marree.
About 100 km (60 mi) to the northeast is the Simpson Desert. About 150 km (100 mi) to the southeast, on the other hand, is Lake Kati Thanda (or Lake Eyre), a large, often dry, endorheic salt lake located in a depression that reaches up to 15 meters (50 ft) below sea level. Once every few years it can be partially filled, and sometimes in a century, following particularly abundant rains, generally in the years of Niña strong, it can be completely filled. In March 2019, it hit its highest level in 50 years.

Oodnadatta

In winter, from June to August, the temperature can sometimes drop to around freezing, although during the day, with the sun, it rises considerably. The coldest record is -2.6 °C (27.3 °F) and was set in June 1961.
In summer, from November to March, it can get very hot during the day.
Oodnadatta is one of the hottest places in Australia, in fact the average high in January is 39 °C (102 °F), in addition, the temperature can exceed 40 °C (104 °F) from late September to April. From December to February it even reached 47/48 °C (117/118): with these temperatures, traveling is dangerous, and you must always have water supplies. In January 1960, if the data is correct, it even reached 50.7 °C (123.6), which should represent the Australian national record.
