Climate chart - Viedma
The climate of Viedma is temperate semi-arid, with mild winters (during which it can get cold at night) and hot summers (but with generally cool nights). The wind blows frequently.
The city is located in central Argentina, in the province of Río Negro, at almost 41 degrees south latitude, about 25 km (15 mi) away from the coast, where the town of El Cóndor is located. Across the Río Negro ("Black River") is the town of Carmen de Patagones.
Even though it is located near the coast, the city is is subject to sudden changes in temperature, in fact, it is exposed both to outbreaks of cold air of Antarctic origin and to invasions of hot air of tropical origin.
In summer, from December to February, it can sometimes get cold at night, while in other circumstances there can be heat waves. The highest recorded temperature was 43.7 °C (110.7 °F), on February 18, 1987. In any case, the wind blows frequently even in this season, moreover, the sea is not warm.
In winter, from June to August, snow is very rare, but at night the temperature can drop below freezing. The lowest recorded temperature was -10.8 °C (12.6 °F), on July 4, 1988.
