Climate chart - Tartagal
The climate of Tartagal is subtropical, with very mild, dry winters (from late May to mid-August) and hot, rainy summers (from December to February). In summer, the rains often occur in the form of thunderstorms.
The city is located in the far north of Argentina, in the province of Salta, at 22 degrees south latitude and 500 meters (1,650 feet) above sea level.
In winter, the difference in temperature between night and day is often noticeable. Also, even though the winter is mild, there can sometimes be periods a bit cold, especially at night, when the temperature can drop to the freezing point or a little below. This typically happens from late May to early September. The record is -5.9 °C (21.4 °F), set in July 1975.
During the day it can get hot all year round, in fact, heat records exceed 30 °C (86 °F) even in winter. Starting in mid-August, in spring, the temperature rises. From September to March there can be heatwaves, in which the temperature exceeds 40 °C (104 °F). The record is 44.8 °C (112.6 °F), set in November 1988. In January 2022, the average maximum was 38.2 °C (100.8 °F).

Tartagal

The northern Andes are arid, however, from November to March there can be some rain, and above 3,700 meters (12,000 feet, see El Aguilar, Tres Cruces), in the early hours of the morning it can even snow, although it is the summer.

Best Time

To visit Tartagal you can choose autumn, from early April to mid-May, since it is a mild period with infrequent rains; sometimes, however, it can get hot.
Winter, from late May to mid-August, is also a good season, mild and dry, but sometimes it can get a bit cold. In spring, starting in mid-August, even though it is still the dry season, it can be very hot.

In the high mountain areas, the best period in terms of temperature is the mildest, between December and March, although rainfall can sometimes block the roads. You can then choose the months of October, November and April, when it is a little colder but the rains are rarer.
If you want, however, you can also choose the winter, since it is a dry and sunny season, but at high altitudes it gets cold, normally below freezing at night, while during the day, with the sun, the temperature increases a lot, normally exceeding the freezing point.
