Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Santiago del Estero is
subtropical (according to the Köppen classification, hot semi-arid climate - BSh), with very mild, dry winters (from late May to mid-August) and hot, rainy summers (from December to March). In summer, the rains often occur in the form of thunderstorms, while in the rest of the year it doesn't rain much. In spring, at the end of a long dry season, dust-laden winds can blow.
The city is located in northern Argentina, at nearly 28 degrees south latitude, and 190 meters (625 feet) above sea level. The Andes are not far away: the first foothills are located about 130 km (80 mi) to the west.
In
winter, the difference in temperature between night and day is often noticeable. Also, even though the winter is mild, there can sometimes be periods a bit cold, especially at night, when the temperature can drop to around freezing or a little below. This typically happens from late May to early September. In July 1975 the temperature dropped to -9 °C (16 °F), while in July 2007 it dropped to -8.5 °C (16.5 °F).
During the day it can get
hot all year round, in fact, the heat records exceed 30 °C (86 °F) even in winter. The hottest days of the year are generally recorded in spring, in October and November. However, from September to March, there can be heat waves, in which the temperature reaches or exceeds 38/40 °C (100/104 °F).
In December 2013, the temperature reached 45 °C (113 °F), and the average high for the month was 39 °C (102 °F). In January 2022 it reached 45.6 °C (114.1 °F), and the average high was 38 °C (100.5 °F).
Best Time
It is difficult to find the best time to visit Santiago del Estero, as the city is subject to temperature changes. In
winter, from late May to mid-August, temperatures are generally mild and rainfall rare, so you can choose this period, but it must be said that sometimes it can get cold, especially at night. You can then choose the period
from mid-April to mid-May, in which both temperature and rainfall are halfway between winter and summer.
