Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Santa Rosa is
subtropical (according to the Köppen classification, humid subtropical climate - Cfa), with mild, dry winters and hot, rainy summers. The temperatures are similar to those of the Mediterranean climate, but the rainfall pattern is opposite, in addition, the differences between night and day are greater, plus, both the wind and the
temperature changes are stronger and more frequent.
The city, formerly known as Santa Rosa de Toay, is the capital of the province of La Pampa and is located in central Argentina, at 36 degrees south latitude and 550 km (340 mi) southwest of Buenos Aires.
Santa Rosa is located in the western part of the so-called "
Humid Pampas", not far from the conventional border with the "
Dry Pampas", which is located further southwest, and receives less than 600 mm (23.5 in) of rain per year.
Winter, from mid-May to mid-August, is mild and quite sunny, with rare and not abundant rains.
In periods of good weather, fog can form, but it rarely lasts until the central hours of the day.
The days are often very mild, however, at night the temperature drops significantly, and during some periods it drops below freezing. During the most intense cold spells, the temperature can drop to about -10 °C (14 °F). The record is -12.7 °C (9.1 °F), set in June 1967.
Snow in Santa Rosa is extremely rare. On the morning of August 19, 2019, there was a snowfall that produced a light blanket, something that had not happened in more than 40 years. To give an indication of the instability of this climate, it can be remembered that ten days later the temperature reached 32 °C.
Summer, from December to February, is hot and sunny, although nights are usually quite cool, in addition, it is the rainiest season, mainly due to thunderstorms.
There can be short cool periods, in which it can also get a little cold at night. However, in other circumstances there can be
heat waves, in which the temperature can reach 40 °C (104 °F). The record is 45.7 °C (114.3 °F), set in January 1955. In January 2014, the temperature reached 44.9 °C (112.8 °F), and the average maximum was 35.5 °C (96 °F).
Best Time
It is difficult to find the best time to visit Santa Rosa, since at night, it can get cold all year round (but especially in winter), while during the day, it can get very hot all year round except in winter. However, you can choose the months of April and October.
